Born 1981 in Paris (France). In 2004, Louis-Cyprien Rials discovered photography in Japan and began a journey in the footsteps of the painter Hiroshige to deliver a comparative analysis of the Japanese landscape in time. Since 2008, he has devoted himself to exploring countries that are not recognized internationally and areas that are forbidden to the public, which he sees as “involuntary natural parks”. The landscape, its depth and the interpretation we have of its representations is an important part of his work. In 2015, he was nominated for the Emerige Prize where he presented his latest video shot in Iraq (Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin), extracted from the trilogy “Deserts”. In 2016, he obtained the support of the CNAP for the realization of his first personal exhibition produced after his trip to the Nuclear Polygon Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan. In 2017 he won the prestigious “SAM Art Prize” which allowed him to travel and create new projects. From July 2018 to January 2019 he lived in Kampala (Uganda) with the team of Ramon Film Productions in Wakaliga, known as Africa’s Bollywood. Later on he crossed Tanzania, Ethiopia and Somalia, in order to prepare a trilogy of solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, gallery Dohyang Lee and gallery Eric Mouchet, all in his natal Paris. He is currently selected for the prize “1% marché de l’art” which will culminate in a solo exhibition at Musée d’art moderne de Paris in October 2020.
